inside the machine
Housing The design of the housing is placed somewhere between spaceship and oversized VR helmet. The white polished surface adds a hightec touch to the giant machine. To adapt to the individual player's height, a lifting mechanism allows to move to upper part up and down. People from 1,65-2,15m can conveniently play. Controller The game controller consists of two QuickShot II joysticks from the golden age of the Commodore 64. Mounted like an airplane flight stick, these joysticks remind of VR simulations and add a video game feeling to the interaction. Buttons for starting the game and moving the machine up and down have been integrated into the rectangular mounting. Sound/Force-Feedback Helmet The original sound system has been replaced by car hifi technology. The speakers are situated right next to the player's ears. Additionally, the helmet is equipped with so called 'bass shakers' that support the sound effects (explosions etc.) of the pinball. Depending on the volume these vibrations can lead to temporal visual blurring. Playfield Modifications The shift of the viewing perspective made a couple of changes to the visual display of the pinball status necessary. Elements that are originally integrated into the playfield have been supplemented by 4 upright display posts that can be read easily from the player's perspective. A illuminated paper model skyline was placed behind the playfield to extend the spacial perception. Camera/Display Five cameras and three mini LCD screens are integrated into the inside of the ////furminator serving two purposes: Parts of the playfield which can not be seen from the player's perspective are filmed by the cameras and projected onto the screens on the inside. The same cameras are also used to project the game to the outside so onlookers can take part in the experience: Camera 1: The Terminator's view: total of playfield w/ player Camera 2: Close up of player face 1 Camera 3: Mounted on rotating cannon to support aiming Camera 4: Top view of bumpers Camera 5: Close up of player face 2 Console An additional console accompanies the ////furminator. The console is housing three coin-in slots, five buttons and an additional LCD screen. The coin mechanism allows the insertion of 0,5/1/2 EURO coins, providing one game (5 balls) for all coins. The money is seen as a donation and is used to maintain the pinball. The buttons are used to switch between the different camera perspectives and the LCD screen can be used to display propaganda movies, sponsor commercials or simply the camera perspectives (1-5).
