Weapons of Mass Distraction, 2006
The Earworm Assault Devices (EAD) are a set of weapons for the propagation of highly infectious sound or music (earworms). Prologue: Sound is unavoidable (the ear can't be shut like the eye) and evolutionary hardwired into our cognition apparatus, it can reach into the subconscious and arouse emotions. A well made sound can get stuck in the head of the hearer and loop for a varying time span. The infected person oftentimes repeats the sound involuntarily by singing, humming or whistling, eventually spreading the earworm like a virus. Messages can be modulated onto earworms like radiowaves on a carrier frequency, as a result earworms can be used to distribute messages or manipulate the individual. This fact is recognized and commercially exploited in various fields of modern life - like pop music, cellphone ringtones, audiobranding or elevator music to name a few. Global brands are using huge budgets to propagate their earworms by means of multiple costly channels, the respectable citizen remains defence- and powerless. Until now: The Earworm Assault Devices (EAD) enable individuals or small groups to distribute their own earworms. Small pieces of highly infectious sound or music can be recorded onto the devices and fired at single or multiple persons, eventually spreading your message out into the world. They come in different shapes and sizes and are affordable for small budgets. Currently, the following models are available: ![]() EWM-12 Earworm Mine 12’’ Multipurpose vibration triggered Earworm Mine with adjustable sensitivity. The workhorse within the Earworm Farm program. Small size and weight of the mine allow for an endless range of applications in urban and natural environments. The continously variable vibration sensor can detect even the smallest agitation. The backside shows openings for record-button, microphone and control-LED. The mine can be (dis-)armed by rotating the lid. Special colors and patterns are available. ---- ![]() SEWP-12.1 Semiautomatic Earworm Pistol 12’’ Lightweight semiautomatic machine pistol with 12 seconds sample time ideally suited for close combat encounters, personal security and self-defense. Small size and weight make it the ideal companion in any situation: Earworms can be recorded directly into the device through the built-in microphone and repeatedly played by pulling the trigger. The megaphone-shaped barrel allows for precise propagation of the earworm. ---- ![]() AEWAR-12.1 Automatic Earworm Assault Rifle 12’’ The fully automatic earworm rifle is especially designed for situations where long-distance and high hit-rates are demanded. The earworm is recorded directly into the magazine, multiple magazines allowing for quick change of assault tactic. The built-in target-laser and night-vision spotlight makes aiming easy even under bad visibility conditions. An extendable butt (not pictured) enables fatique-free handling and the pressure-chamber-spaeker satisfies with high range and precisely directed propagation. ---- ![]() AAV-1 Audio Attack Vehicle v.1 The desert-dog among the earworm propagation devices: Again, earworms with a duration up to 12 seconds can be recorded and fired, but this time everything can be operated remotely with the multipurpose helmet-remote-control. The low weight and durable construction combined with the high velocity of the vehicle make this device ideally suited for surprise attacks in all-terrains. The deployable radius is only limited by your imagination and the field of vision. ---- ![]() EWGL-1 Earworm Grenade Launcher v.1 Technically the most advanced development within the Earworm Farm program. This caterpillar-driven tank is extremely agile and can be stopped by almost nothing. It is equipped with an on-board camera and a grenade launcher with a range of approx. 3 meters. The grenade is loaded before deployment (max. earworm duration 12 seconds) and the vehicle can be guided into the target area by remote control. The camera signal is radio-transmitted and gives the vehicle an extraordinary broad reach. Upon arrival at the target site the grenade is launched by pressing a button on the remote control and the earworm is triggered and looped on impact. ---- The EAD were developed under the umbrella of the Earworm Farm Project for the CyNetArt Dresden with generous support by the Ministry of Science and Arts, Saxony.
